Summer’s versatile fashions

If some precious summer downtime finds you enjoying brunch on the patio, heading out to music festivals, enjoying evenings out on the town with friends or simply making a beeline for the nearest pool, summer is laden with opportunities to recharge your style along with your spirit.
"Summer's laid-back and carefree attitude makes it a great time to bend traditional style rules and to wear colours like white, which is iconic as it reinvents and updates itself every summer, in new variations on items such as jeans, dresses and handbags," says Chrissy Volk, the owner of a style consultancy Adahlia Volk. Whether you opt for white Capri pants accompanied by a tank under a gauzy peasant top cinched by a woven belt, or the beauty of a "little white dress", this ethereal colour will always make you look fresh.
"The little white dress is a versatile (summer) essential that is easily dressed up or down. Wear it as a cover up at the beach, and go from poolside to patio in an instant, by adding super stylish accessories such as a woven belt and metallic sandals," suggests Victoria Kirk, a spokesperson for Old Navy.
Convertible dresses made of lightweight knit material in white, black or brighter colours are among the other stylish and versatile options that also go far.
Wear them halter style or bandeau style as a knee-length dress or wear them around your waist as maxi length skirts paired with fitted tops and other accessories for a look that goes from day to night.
Maxi skirts and dresses are among the other items recommended by experts as both stylish and versatile enough to wear to afternoon and evening events, such as music concerts, the beach, meals and evenings out.
"My go-to staple for summer is a maxi dress. Look stylish for brunch with friends, right through to a day at the beach. Pair your maxi dress with fitted tops and long colourful necklaces to add that extra wow factor to your outfit. During the day wear your maxi with sparkly ballet flats and or colourful sandals. For evening, switch to an espadrille style wedge," recommends Alexis Honce, a stylist with Toronto's Plutino Group.
Of course, if you're going to the beach, you won't want to forget some other key essentials, such as a swimsuit, a sunhat, sun block, a beach bag and sunglasses which can range in shape from oversized, celeb inspired styles to retro-inspired cat eyes.
"Don't forget sunglasses. They're the perfect addition to keep your look current and the sun out of your eyes. Cat eye sunglasses were seen all over the runways, including those of Alexander Wang, Giles and Stella McCartney," adds Honce.
If dinner and the theatre or a mid-afternoon social gathering is on the agenda, other must-have options for looking chic include vibrantly coloured and floral print sheath dresses, which can be easily accessorized with snazzy sandals, colourful jewelry and topped off with a shrug as you wish.
